![]() ![]() We are most grateful to our colleagues in Europe and in the USA, who are busy clinicians and clinical academics and who frequently encounter patients presenting as emergencies. We have therefore edited this textbook “Oncologic Emergencies” with this in mind. In these emergency situations it is essential that treatment is appropriate and prompt in order to be life-saving. We were prompted to write this textbook by our colleagues both in family practice/internal medicine and in specialist hospital practice who are seeing an increasing number of patients presenting either with a complication of the cancer or as a sequel to their treatment. These patients present to their family doctor/internist, Accident and Emergency Departments, or as an acute hospital admission, either as an emergency due to the disease itself, or as a complication of the treatment of the disease. Furthermore, some cancers present acutely as an emergency with complications such as raised intracranial pressure and spinal cord compression. With the increasing use of radiotherapy and the exponential increase in chemotherapy in cancer patients, many patients now present with complications of their treatment. Virtually every doctor and nurse, either in family or hospital practice, will come into contact with patients with cancer at some point in their career. Preface One in three of our population will develop cancer in their lifetime and one in five will die from this disease.
